Physicians support the healthcare system in a variety of ways to promote the health and well-being of individuals and communities. In providing patient care, physicians may support Nova Scotians in the diagnosis and treatment of illness or injury, prevent future illness, provide chronic disease management support, and more

Steps to becoming a physician in Nova Scotia.

Step 1
Register and secure your Nova Scotia licence.

If you are a specialist, visit the Royal College of Physicians and surgeons Canada and their process. After you have successfully registered, you will also need a Nova Scotian licence, through the College of Physicians and Surgeons Nova Scotia.

If you are a Family Physician or General Practitioner go to the College of Physicians and Surgeons Nova Scotia to start your licensing process.

If the College of Physicians and Surgeons Nova Scotia determines you are not eligible for a licence, they will indicate whether or not you qualify for the Nova Scotia Practice Ready Assessment Program (NSPRAP).

  • If you do qualify for the NSPRAP, the College will refer you to a Coordinator to support your application and hopeful acceptance to the NSPRAP.
  • If you do not qualify for the NSPRAP, you can immigrate to Canada through Express Entry. If you already have status in Canada, then you should connect with the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS) to ask about physician bridging programs.

You can also apply for general consideration via email to the physician recruitment team at NSH at Physicianrecruit@nshealth.ca.

Step 3
Arrange your sponsorship (if needed)

If you are not a Canadian Citizen or Permanent resident, you will need to be sponsored to begin working in Nova Scotia. After you have accepted a job offer, a recruiter can connect you with various programs and resources within the Government of Nova Scotia. There is support available to you and your immediate family, through the provincial nomination process.
