Complete a Medical Administration Program

Step 1
Complete a Medical Administration Program

To start your career, complete a medical administration or medical office administration program. These programs are typically offered through community colleges or private career colleges and can take 1–2 years to complete.
Programs usually include training in:

  • Medical terminology
  • Healthcare documentation and records management
  • Scheduling and patient coordination
  • Office software and administrative systems

NSCC and other institutions offer recognized programs in Nova Scotia.

Step 2
Gain Practical Experience

Gain Practical Experience
Many programs include work placements or practicums, allowing you to gain hands-on experience in a healthcare setting such as a clinic, hospital, or medical office.

If your program does not include a placement, consider seeking entry-level administrative roles or volunteering to build experience.

Step 3
Optional: Obtain Certification

Certification is not required to work as a Medical Administrator in Nova Scotia, but it may be preferred by some employers.

You may choose to pursue certification through organizations such as:

  • Canadian College of Health Information Management (CCHIM)
  • Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA)
  • Other administrative or health office certifications
