Successful external applicants will be eligible to receive a one-time Signing Bonus of $10,000. In turn, a Return of Service will be required for a (2) two-year period.

The Opportunity

The role of the Radiological Technologist III is to organize and directly supervise the daily operations within the department and to effectively communicate and collaborate to ensure the most efficient and highest quality of care with other IWK departments, to ensure DI services are managed with the patient’s and family’s needs as a priority.  

The Radiological Technologist III acts as a resource and mentor for staff in their area of certification, exhibiting leadership and sound professional judgement by:

  • Collaborating with team members to ensure effective clinical operations on a day-to-day basis. 
  • Facilitating daily workflow (i.e. arranging replacements for staff illness or emergencies, etc.)
  • Coordinating diagnostic imaging (DI) services for the patient population to ensure that DI services are managed with the patient’s and family’s needs as a priority.
  • Acting as a liaison between radiologist and clinical staff for new protocols and new procedures. 
  • Collaborating with the Managers and identifying issues that have potential or actual impact on clinical care.
  • Coordinating the maintenance and repair of equipment within the modality, both routine and emergency. Adjusting schedules accordingly. 
  • Evaluating workflow methods and procedures and taking measures to improve workflow issues.  
  • Responsible for timekeeping, ordering supplies, resolving staffing issues, staff scheduling, collecting workload data as required for stats.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a clinical/technical resource for staff regarding patient and family care issues.
  • Addresses everyday issues patients may experience (e.g., wait times)
  • Facilitates decision making by promoting collaboration and cooperation amongst team members.
  • Protects patient and family privacy by creating an environment that is safe and secure.
  • Ensures DI services reflect the principles of family centered care. 
  • Ensures and promotes workplace safety.
  • Participates in recruitment and selection of staff as required. 
  • Identifies clinical issues requiring staff education and collaborates with appropriate individuals to address learning needs.
  • Demonstrates commitment to continuous learning through participation in activities such as in-service programs, conferences and continuing professional development.
  • Responsible for ensuring optimal equipment performance by overseeing quality control activities and ensuring engagement of staff and service vendors  as required.
  • Oversees mammography accreditation program status and follows the department process for compliance.
  • Oversees onboarding, training and competencies of technologists in breast imaging for mammography, breast ultrasound and image guided interventional procedures.
  • Supports colleagues in their ongoing development by offering constructive feedback; mentors team members through supportive teaching and coaching. 
  • Monitors staff productivity and patient wait times and makes the appropriate adjustments to address any delays.
  • Establishes and maintains a working relationship with all patient care areas within the health centre. 
  • Orients new staff and students to the department, responsible for oversight. 
  • Prioritize tasks, assigns work, and monitors progress to achieve planned outcomes.
  • Champions new practices and programs to help ensure staff compliance. 
  • Represents the department on groups and committees with respect to changes that will affect the operation of the department and offers input on modifications necessary to implement these changes. 
  • Provides input to evaluation of services delivered by monitoring daily protocols and quality including physician feedback. 
  • Performs regular analysis of workload and procedures and provides advice with regard to changes that may be required in consultation with the Department Manager and Medical lead.   
  • Fulfills the duties of a technologist in breast imaging (such as but not limited to - taking client medical history, explaining imaging procedure, performing imaging procedure, developing and evaluating images for positioning and image quality, and completing the associated paperwork.)
  • Maintains cross training at all breast imaging sites

Hours of Work

Days, 75 hours bi-weekly.

Your Qualifications

  • Graduate of a recognized school of imaging technology required; courses in breast imaging preferred; degree or advanced certification an asset  
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related clinical experience as a breast imaging technologist required
  • Experience in breast ultrasound and associated interventional procedures is an asset
  • Licensed or eligible to be licensed by the Nova Scotia College of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Professionals (NSCMIRTP) required
  • Current successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support Level (BLS) Program within the last 12 months, or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate, required
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing relevant learning 
  • Familiarity with PACS and HIS/RIS system an asset
  • Mammography Accreditation Program accredited
  • Previous leadership experience preferred
  • Demonstrates effective decision making 
  • Utilizes sound problem-solving skills and ability to make independent technical decisions
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively both written and verbal 
  • Team building skills and experience working effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team 
  • Competencies in a second language is an asset
