The Cape Breton Medical Campus (CBMC) is a regional medical campus of Dalhousie University in partnership with Cape Breton University (CBU). The focus of the CBMC is family medicine and rural health. The CBMC is supporting a research program focused on family medicine led by family physicians. The CBMC Research Mandate focuses on improving health outcomes in and with rural communities through applied research in healthy aging, chronic disease prevention, and equitable, accessible models of care, particularly in rural family medicine and primary care.

Located adjacent to the Cape Breton Medical Campus, The Rising Tide Collaborative Health Home is a teaching clinic that will provide accessible, comprehensive, and team-based primary health care in partnership with Nova Scotia Health.  The clinic will support patient attachment, collaborative care, and medical education — creating an integrated learning and care environment for residents, students, and interprofessional teams.

Job Description

CBMC and Rising Tide Collaborative Health Home are seeking Family Physician Clinician Scientist-Practitioners. The Clinician Scientist position will develop and sustain an impactful research program that advances the CBMC Research Mandate and as a Family Medicine Practitioner in the clinic, will contribute to the education of residents and students through preceptorship, mentorship, and role modeling in a supportive learning environment. 

They will collaborate with CBU, Dalhousie University and Nova Scotia Health colleagues to advance research initiatives aligned with the CBMC Research Mandate: the practice of Family Medicine and in particular, rural family medicine in Nova Scotia and Canada; supporting and mentoring medical students, residents, graduate students, and non-research faculty to undertake research.

The successful candidate will also have collaborative opportunities to work with members of the Dalhousie Department of Family Medicine Primary Care Research Unit.

The successful candidate will foster a culture of research excellence, collaboration, and learner engagement across clinical and academic settings. It is expected that the successful candidate will obtain local, national, and international research funding, publish in academic peer-reviewed journals, and present at local, national and international conferences and pursue leadership and academic career development opportunities.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Contribute to the education of residents and students through preceptorship, mentorship, and role modeling in a supportive clinical learning environment working with other family physicians, medical learners, nurses, and allied health professionals to deliver quality, coordinated care.
  • Be well supported through the CBU Office of Research and Graduate Studies throughout the appointment, with support for grant development, trainee supervision, research compliance, and program growth.
  • Hold academic appointments at both Cape Breton University (CBU) and Dalhousie University through the Cape Breton Medical Campus (CBMC), contributing to a collaborative, distributed model of medical education and research.
  • Report to the Senior Associate Dean at the CBMC.
  • Work collaboratively with the Associate Vice President Research & Innovation at Cape Breton University (CBU) to support the growth of health research that will benefit both the CBMC and Cape Breton University (CBU).
  • Work collaboratively with the Head of the Department of Family Medicine, Dalhousie University.

Expected Hours

  • Full-time hours divided across academic and clinical work 
  • 0.4- 0.6 FTE Research (5-year appointment for research component with possibility of renewal)
  • 0.6- 0.4 FTE time available for clinical work as an independent practitioner
  • includes some evening/weekend hours to enhance patient access
