The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager with responsibilities for nursing practice, the Clinical Practice Leader works collaboratively with partners within the health sector (for example NSH, OPOR, DHW). The Clinical Practice Leader provides support to the nurses that work within all programs at IWK Health. The Clinical Practice Leader works to ensure that the standards of practice, code of ethics and relevant health policies are incorporated into decision making and processes that impact professional and interprofessional practice. To foster and advance evidence-based practice, a portion of the Clinical Practice Leader time will provide nursing services in professional practice programs (example: Nurse Residency Program).

The Clinical Practice Leader provides expert clinical practice support to nurses and liaising with system partners to further define and enhance nursing practice at IWK Health. They plan, develop, and implement educational activities at a clinical team or program level to foster the development of competence of the nurses within the organization. They participate actively in the development of peers and partners through coaching and mentorship and by sharing knowledge and resources and providing feedback. In this role, the Clinical Practice Leader acts as a clinical resource for evidence-based patient care, continuing education, development and/or review of policies, objectives, and guidelines.

The Clinical Practice Leader practices according to the Nursing Act, Nova Scotia College of Nurses, and Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses.

Hours of Work

Monday-Friday, 8 hour days

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)/Bachelor of Nursing (BN) degree.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Current registration (or eligible for registration) with the Nova Scotia College of Nurses (NSCN).
  • Minimum three years (3) to five (5) years nursing experience essential, preferably in a variety of clinical settings.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing nursing care for the population(s) we serve at IWK Health and effective teaching methods to nurses in the health care system.
  • Current successful completion of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (BLS) Program within the last 12 months, or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate.
  • Broad knowledge of the Nova Scotia health care system.
  • Understanding of the scope of practice for a variety of Health Care Professionals providing services in the hospital and community setting.
  • Demonstrates ability to function autonomously.
  • Ability to undertake literature searches for best practices and integrate this information into the development of standards/guidelines for optimized nursing clinical practice.
  • Ability to describe and demonstrate a commitment to the philosophy and principles of patient and family centered-care, Baby Friendly Initiative, Child Kind, adult education, and equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and reconciliation.
  • Demonstrates abilities for navigating complex systems, critical thinking, problem solving, clinical judgement and decision making.
  • Supports Accreditation standards and quality improvement practices.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Professional Suite programs and the OPOR-CIS.
  • Demonstrated time management and organizational abilities to manage workload.
  • Excellent facilitation skills, ideally a dynamic style in group settings.
  • Demonstrated program evaluation skills.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Commitment to occupational health and safety.
  • Demonstrated good attendance in current and past employment.
