The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager of Ambulatory Surgical Care, and under the direct supervision of the Clinical Leader, Shared Clinics, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a member of an interprofessional health care team, who collaborate together in the delivery of care to meet the needs of patients and their families within the Shared Clinics Team. The LPN practices independently, in collaboration with, and under the direction of, the RNs and Surgeons in the provision of care through assessment, treatment, and education to those patients and their families with surgical related illnesses and/or injuries.
- Providing holistic patient and family centered care to children and their families.
- Assessing patient and family needs during clinic visits; communicating pertinent patient/family information to the appropriate interprofessional team member(s).
- Collaborating with team members to develop and implement an individualized medical plan of care.
- Performing and/or assisting with treatments/procedures within scope of practice and competency
- Providing appropriate patient and family education related to illness or injuries as required, including pre-operative and post-operative teaching.
- Consulting other health care providers, as needed, in the delivery of family centered care.
- Collaborating with the Clinical Leader of Shared Clinics and other staff as appropriate, in the implementation of quality initiatives including the development and maintenance of clinical and operational policies, protocols, standards, guidelines and educational material.
- In collaboration with the team members and the Clinical Leader of Shared Clinics, participating in identifying issues that have potential or actual impact on clinical care.
- Participating in the orientation of learners and new staff to the clinic and Shared Clinics as appropriate.
- Collaborating with Registered Nurses in Shared Clinics as needed.

Your Qualifications
- Graduate from an approved Practical Nurse Diploma Program required; 2 year diploma program preferred.
- Active license with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Nova Scotia required.
- Successful completion of pharmacology and health assessment courses required.
- Sound knowledge of the role and scope of practice of the LPN within an ambulatory setting.
- Current successful completion of CPR Level-C Healthcare Provider within the last 12 months required.
- Recent clinical experience that includes administration of medications and health assessments required.
- Recent clinical experience in pediatric care and/or ambulatory care required.
- Demonstrated understanding and champion of family centered care required.
- Demonstrated assessment and child/family teaching skills required.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of an interprofessional health care team as well as identify the need for, and accept direction as required.
- Demonstrated critical thinking, within scope of practice, including: clinical judgment, problem solving skills and strong decision making ability required.
- Demonstrated professional behaviour and strong interpersonal and communication (verbal & written) skills required.
- Demonstrated initiative, excellent time management and organizational skills required.
- Advanced working knowledge of Windows, MS Office programs, Adobe Professional, Outlook, Meditech, and Internet searches preferred.
- Competency in other languages considered an asset.
