About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager Healthy Communities, the Healthy Built Environment Coordinator (HBEC) will work collaboratively in a team environment with, nutritionists, health promoters, consultants, planners, and other stakeholders to identify strategic areas of action, and accelerate integration of health considerations into land use, transportation and healthy built environment policies. This work will align principles of Public Health and planning to various plans such as smart growth, Transportation Demand Management, natural environments, sustainability, and transit-oriented development.

 

This position will also bring a focus on reducing health inequities related to the build environment.  As a member of the Healthy Communities team, the Healthy Built Environment Coordinator will contribute to an understanding of the health impacts of built environments, the opportunities for improvement and collaboration with stakeholders to promote community designs that facilitate healthy communities where people live, work and play.

 

The HBEC will support Public Health Services in adapting, implementing, evaluating and further disseminating the tools and promising practices that have been developed in other jurisdictions. They will foster meaningful engagement and collaboration with local community planners, engineers, NGOs, and other stakeholders in the development, implementation and evaluation of tools and interventions

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

 

  • Undergraduate degree in Community/Urban Planning or Civil Engineering
  • Masters' degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years' related experience
  • Member of Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) required
  • Understanding of the association and policy issues related to health outcomes and built environment
  • Familiarity with land use planning, community planning, and transportation planning
  • Experience in the application of public health principles and practices, partnership development, and community development 
  • Familiarity with population health, health promotion and disease prevention concepts
  • A valid Nova Scotia's driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • The HBEC must have proficiency with computers, including MS Office, internet, email
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours

  • Permanent full-time position; 70 hours Bi-weekly

Compensation and Benefits

$39.22 - $47.59
