Dartmouth General Hospital (DGH) is an acute-care community hospital located within the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. It has recently expanded to 180 beds, including a busy eight (8) bed medical/surgical/cardiac intensive care unit, with plans for a six (6) bed intermediate care unit and anticipated further growth in the coming years. DGH has tremendous local support from the community, including the support of the DGH Foundation, which is an indispensable resource for our hospital, helping to coordinate local philanthropy to fund state-of-the-art equipment purchases.
Dartmouth is part of the rapidly growing and beautiful city of Halifax, Nova Scotia; situated around Kjipuktuk (“The great harbour”), which is part of the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq people. Once a well-kept secret, Dartmouth has become a major nesting spot for young professionals and families.
Dartmouth’s downtown core (Punamu’kwati’jk, “At the tomcod place”) is home to world class restaurants and breweries, incredible bakeries and cafes, and a variety of fun specialty shops as well. On the weekend, a morning visit to the Alderney Landing Farmers' Market never fails to reward visitors with delicious baked goods, ready-to-eat dishes, fresh produce, and locally made crafts.
Dartmouth is also a wonderful place if you love the outdoors. Nicknamed “The City of Lakes”, Dartmouth boasts 23 lakes that provide opportunities for all forms of watersport and activities. Lake Banook (Panuk) is a world-class paddling course, where regattas are often held. Dartmouth also has many wonderful public green spaces for families and nature lovers to enjoy, including the beautiful wooded area of Shubie Park, Sullivan’s pond, Brightwood Golf course, and the head of the Salt Marsh Trail. Just thirty minutes outside the city are a number of public beaches for family fun and excellent surfing opportunities, such as Rainbow Haven and Lawrencetown (Tapuisimkek). Many Dartmouthians spend time running, walking, hiking, cycling, and surfing on their days off.
Nova Scotia Health is seeking two (2) full-time adult cardiologists to provide cardiac diagnostics, inpatient consultative services, and internal medicine call coverage at Dartmouth General Hospital (DGH); as well as outpatient consultative services in the Dartmouth community. Cardiologists interested in providing general cardiology care, while also participating in an internal medicine call rota, are encouraged to apply.
One position is permanent, and a second position we are anticipating as a one year locum, with the potential to become permanent (pending funding for a third sonographer; see below).
The in-house cardiac diagnostics department has one treadmill for stress testing, and time is divided amongst the DGH internists who perform stress testing. Echocardiography services currently include two Philips EPIQ machines staffed by two sonographers. This complement will increase to three (3) machines and sonographers for one year dependent on sonographer staffing. Funding is expected to continue beyond one year, but officially is to be determined. Transesophageal and stress echo are also performed at DGH.
Dartmouth General cardiologists also have excellent access to advanced cardiology imaging (e.g. Cardiac MR, cardiac PET) and advanced subspecialist cardiology consultation through the QEII Health Science Centre, the region’s tertiary referral centre, which is located just 20 minutes away in downtown Halifax.
Reading of all echocardiograms is shared equitably within the cardiologist group, generally on a weekly basis. During this week, the cardiologist on echo is also responsible for covering the NP-led Heart Function clinic, and providing inpatient consult support as needed to the ICU and internal medicine groups. Successful candidates will also provide an equitable share of coverage of internal medicine hospital services, and will be required to operate a full-time outpatient cardiology practice in the Dartmouth community, with a volume similar to the current DGH cardiologists.
Successful candidates will join the collegial internal medicine group at DGH, which currently includes two cardiologists, ten full-time general internists, four gastroenterologists, an infectious disease specialist, two respirologists, and one neurologist.
Responsibilities
DGH cardiologists are responsible to the central zone department of medicine department head, and relevant clinical division leads; as well as the DGH site leadership (Medical site lead and internal medicine site lead) for their professional responsibilities and quality of practice, and will operate within the Medical Staff Bylaws of Nova Scotia Health.
Remuneration
Remuneration for clinical work and teaching/supervision is fee-for-service, as per the Physician Services Master Agreement of Nova Scotia, with guaranteed daily minimums for internal medicine hospital service coverage.
Candidates must be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) in Internal Medicine and Cardiology and be eligible to be licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS). Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association is required.
Candidates will be expected to accept an academic appointment to the Department of Medicine at Dalhousie University. Academic rank will be dependent on qualifications and experience. Dartmouth is a popular community site for students and residents from Dalhousie Medical School. Teaching and supervision of these learners is expected. There is also an expectation that successful candidates will share in non-clinical hospital and group responsibilities including education/M&M rounds, and participation in the IM/ICU group meetings. Candidates will additionally be appointed to the clinical division of Cardiology in the Nova Scotia Health Central Zone.
