The Department of Psychiatry is a mid-sized clinical academic department within the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Faculty work as members of multidisciplinary teams within the Nova Scotia Health Mental Health and Addiction Program to provide general psychiatric services to patients primarily in the Central Zone and specialty services to patients across the province.
Job Description
The Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University is recruiting for a Locum Staff Psychiatrist for the Section of Geriatric Psychiatry at the Dartmouth Geriatric Psychiatry Outreach Team, located in Dartmouth in Central Zone of the Nova Scotia Health Authority (CZ-NSHA).
This position is 0.6-0.8 FTE (flexible). The position start date is flexible, commencing approximately mid-August, and will continue through to mid-August 2027.
Remuneration is based upon a highly competitive Academic Funding Plan, which pays for time spent in clinical service, teaching, and research. Successful candidates will receive an academic rank commensurate with qualifications and experience as per university protocols.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Clinical duties:
• As directed by the Section Head of Geriatric Psychiatry at Dalhousie University
• Provide direct and indirect patient care as part of an interdisciplinary team in a variety of settings including outreach clinics, home visits, and long-term care settings
• Provide clinical supervision for a variety of learners including clinical clerks, Psychiatry residents, and Geriatric Psychiatry subspecialty residents
• Participate in delivery of general on-call services for the Department of Psychiatry
• Participate in team events, such bi-monthly team meetings
Educational Duties:
• As directed by the Director of Education and Section Head of Geriatric Psychiatry at Dalhousie University
• Participate in preparation and delivery of didactic teaching at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education level
Research:
This locum position does not provide formal protected time for research, but opportunity may arise to collaborate with colleagues on new and in-progress research activity dependent on interest and prior experience of the successful candidate.
Qualifications
Fellowship in Psychiatry, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent as determined by the Department of Psychiatry; eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia. Preference will be given to applicants with FRCPC, or equivalent, in Geriatric Psychiatry.
