PACE (Physician Assessment Centre of Excellence) is Nova Scotia’s new practice ready assessment program for Internationally Trained Physicians (ITP). This pathway program is for family physicians and internal medicine specialists with hospitalist experience.  PACE evaluates your readiness to practice through a workplace based assessment in real healthcare settings.

PACE provides an innovative, centralized model that consolidates all assessment activities under one roof, setting it apart from other practice ready assessment programs across Canada. This unique approach underscores PACE’s commitment to streamlined, comprehensive evaluations for Internationally Trained Physicians.

Job Description

PACE has partnered with Nova Scotia Health to establish two hospital sites offering assessments in hospitalist medicine. Candidates offered a position in the hospitalist medicine assessment program will provide care to inpatients while overseen by well-trained hospitalists.

PACE has partnered with two Nova Scotia Health hospitals — Dartmouth General Hospital and Colchester East Hants Health Centre. If you are selected for the hospitalist assessment program, the PACE team will advise you of the location where your assessment will take place.

The Assessment Program was developed in partnership with the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) and aligns with the National Assessment Collaboration for Practice Ready Assessment (NAC PRA) Family Medicine Standards.

Qualifications

READ CAREFULLY BEFORE UPLOADING  

PACE will be screening your submission to confirm your recency of practice. To be eligible for the assessment program you need to have completed a minimum of two years of internship or postgraduate training in family medicine or general practice , or internal medicine, within the last five years OR a minimum of 450 in person clinical hours of independent practice (not under supervision, acting as the most responsible physician) in family medicine or general practice within the last five years  CPSNS 2025 

Please ensure your work experience details clearly identify when you acted independently as the most responsible physician (defined by the physician, or other regulated healthcare professional, who has overall responsibility for directing and coordinating the care and management of a patient at a specific point in time CMPA, 2019). Each entry must explicitly outline when you were active in the role (when did you start/finish), if the role was full or part time, how many hours you attended per month, and if there were any gaps in your practise.    

PACE is unable to accept hours practising in an Associate Physician or Clinical Assistant role when calculating currency.

Tips & Tricks
Review the Hospitalist Program eligibility criteria on the CPSNS website before you begin.
Once you are ready to apply, set aside 30-45 minutes to complete the application.
Before beginning the PACE application form, ensure you have all necessary information and documents ready. The form must be completed in one sitting, as progress cannot be saved mid-way and continued at a later time.
