Job Description

Please Note:  This is a designated position. The successful candidate must be from the following designated group in order to be considered; must self-identify as Indigenous and be able to verify that they are a recognized member of a First Nation community. When applying, please ensure your Candidate Profile and Personal Information is up to date which includes any self-identifications.

These are full scope practices, providing care for patients at all stages of life.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • ensure delivery of comprehensive primary health care services to practice patients of all ages and stages of health or illness
  • provide a full scope of services
  • participate equitably in afterhours/weekend care on a rotation with the physician group
  • express, incorporate, and celebrate culture in your clinical space with safety and support
  • inpatient care is available, but not a requirement 
  • long term care is also available

Qualifications

  • All applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS)
  • All family physicians must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
  • Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
  • Cultural knowledge and understanding of the legacy of residential schools, colonization, assimilation, and the impacts of such history on the health of Indigenous peoples.
  • Cultural sensitivity & awareness for Indigenous cultures and practices, with an openness to learning and engaging with Indigenous communities.
  • Possess and thorough understanding of the social determinants of health of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.
  • Mi’kmaq language an asset.

Community Details

The Millbrook First Nation is a Mi'kmaq community located within the town of Truro, positioned in the Hub of Nova Scotia. Millbrook provides opportunities for their Membership by creating a diverse range of economic development initiatives to aid in strengthening capacity, wealth, and improving overall well-being of the Community.

Millbrook’s laser focus consists of bringing economic, social, and cultural perspectives to all economic development initiatives and for the Community through business development, land and resource development and acquisitions, labor force reinvestment and development, procurement and partnership development and socio-economic and Community development.

Millbrook has thrived in economic development in the past decade with large scale projects such as the Millbrook Power Centre and the Shannon Park development and continues to actively pursue joint venture opportunities with local, national, and international companies in a broad diversity of sectors and includes medium to large-scale industrial projects, clean tech, alternative/green energy, fisheries, and tourism.

In addition to the existing Millbrook Health Centre, a collaborative partnership between Millbrook First Nation and Nova Scotia Health is set to bring about the construction of an enhanced health home for the community and surrounding areas. This project will provide much-needed increased access to communities where the population is growing. The intent is for the new health facility to include expansive space for a collaborative family practice, an urgent/afterhours primary care clinic, a state-of-the-art chronic disease clinic, blood collection services, a primary care centre for individuals who do not have a provider, adult outpatient mental health services, collaborative space for medical teaching activities, and dedicated cultural space for cultural learning. 

Truro is home to more than 12,000 residents and a thriving business community. Residents of Truro enjoy active living. They often boast about Victoria Park, a natural 400 acre woodland park in the centre of town, and their state-of-the art recreation centre (Rath Eastlink Community Centre) that offers an NHL sized arena, a competition-sized (25m) swimming pool, a water slide, a fitness centre, and a rock climbing wall. Truro is known for its excellent education offerings for students of all ages in English and French, particularly its high school level arts programs and extra-curricular performances. Truro is home to a campus for Nova Scotia Community CollegeThe Institute of Human Services Education, and the Agricultural Campus of Dalhousie University. Truro is conveniently located less than one hour's commute to Halifax and 30 minutes to the Halifax International Airport.
