Company Description
Veteran's Memorial Hospital is seeking a compassionate and skilled physician to join our team in the Geriatric Restorative Care Unit. This position offers flexible coverage options, with the multiple weeks or months at a time, depending on the physician's availability. The physician will provide clinical care for a diverse group of patients in a restorative care setting, overseeing a patient population of 8 inpatient beds, with a focus on low acuity but immobile patients recovering from various conditions, including post-surgical recovery, chronic illnesses, neurological impairments, and deconditioning.
We welcome candidates with a variety of backgrounds, including those trained in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, or Residents moonlighting who are interested in gaining experience in a geriatrics-based hospital environment.
Patient Population:
- Low Acuity but Immobile: Patients who are stable but unable to move independently due to illness or treatment, such as those recovering from surgeries, experiencing chronic conditions, or having neurological impairments.
- Patient Conditions: Includes post-operative orthopedic patients (e.g., hip/knee replacements), individuals recovering from internal medicine conditions (e.g., heart failure), patients with neurological disorders (e.g., stroke recovery), and those with severe deconditioning requiring supportive restorative care.
Work Schedule:
This is a casual position with shifts available from multiple weeks to months at a time. Coverage is needed Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. No weekend or on-call hours are required.
Flexible Coverage until April 1st 2025
Compensation: Fee-for-Service plus $16.94 per bed incentivized rate. Total compensation for 8 beds estimated at $639.50 (amount based on average billings for these patients). No call requirement.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide medical management and oversight of inpatients in the Geriatric Restorative Care Unit.
- Develop and implement individualized care plans, focusing on restorative care and rehabilitation to improve functional independence.
- Perform daily rounds and assess the medical needs of patients.
- Coordinate care with nursing, rehabilitation, social work, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care.
- Monitor and adjust treatments based on patient progress, medical conditions, and recovery goals.
- Document patient progress and update medical records accurately and timely.
- Educate patients and families on medical conditions, treatment plans, and expected outcomes.
- Collaborate with hospital staff to ensure high standards of care and safety for all patients.
Qualifications
- All applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS)
- Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
- Training in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, or equivalent, or eligibility for a resident moonlighting position.
