Eastern Zone covers the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough and Cape Breton Island. This part of the province is home to two regional hospitals, located in Antigonish and Sydney; 11 community hospitals, and one Collaborative Emergency Centre. Sydney’s Cape Breton Regional Hospital is the second largest acute care facility in Nova Scotia, and St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, in Antigonish, was founded in 1906 by the Sisters of St. Martha’s and provides a wide range of health care services.

About the Department of Anaesthesia

  • Represents approximately 15 physicians working in Sydney and Antigonish
  • Oversees the provision of anesthetic services across the Eastern Zone.
  • Works with Anaesthesia Site Leads to develop a schedule of physicians to ensure coverage of Anaesthesia Departments and appropriate medical administration throughout the zone.

Job Description

Role Accountabilities

  1. Ensure that department members are compliant with the Bylaws and Rules and regulations of the NSHA.
  2. Hold regular department meetings and provide the Zone Medical Executive Director with meeting minutes.
  3. Attend relevant committee meetings as assigned by the Medical Executive Director.
  4. Provide co-leadership along with the Zone administrative director of the zone department for strategic and operational planning and budgeting.
  5. Works with Specialty Site Leads to ensure service continuity is maintained through Department scheduling practices, including but not limited to vacation requests, on-call scheduling, and locum utilization.
  6. Participate in the monitoring of standards, quality, and utilization of resources of the department in the zone.
  7. Provide Performance management for all department members.
  8. Provide complaint and discipline management for department members.
  9. Coordinate medical students and resident education and teachings in the Zone.
  10. Supports the research agenda within the department.
  11. Participate in any clinical services planning for the Zone/NSHA.
  12. Co-Leads recruitment/retention for the department with Zone Physician Recruitment Team;
  13. Ensures that new hire and onboarding processes are completed with support from the Specialty Site Lead as required.
  14. Organize, along with Organization Performance, regular MMR (Morbidity and Mortality Rounds) for the Department.
  15. Participate in Leadership development.

Qualifications

Eligibility

  • MD licensed in Nova Scotia (with certification in Anaesthesia) and privileged with Nova Scotia Health
  • Evidence of past and ongoing leadership training

Anticipated Start Date: January 1, 2025
