Company Description

The Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) were developed with the goal of coordinating screening and management of osteoporosis for patients who have experienced a fragility Major Osteoporotic Fracture (MOF) with the goal of preventing imminent new fractures.

Established in 2016 as a service of Nova Scotia Health, the Fracture Liaison Services provide clinical osteoporosis services to patients with acute fragility MOF fractures who present to orthopaedic services.  There are currently FLSs at Aberdeen Regional Hospital, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Dartmouth General Hospital and Valley Regional Hospital. 

There is a need for implementation of FLS at the Halifax Infirmary.

Job Description

Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

Accountable to the Senior Medical Director, PHC-CDM Clinical Network and Senior Director, PHC-CDM Clinical Network, the Medical Director of FLS is responsible for clinical oversight and quality improvement for all aspects of the program. As Medical Director – FLS, you will be responsible for:

  • Clinical oversight: provision of day-to-day clinical guidance and support, as needed, for the FLS nurses.  Attendance at the NSH FLS Team meetings (FLS Medical Director and all of the FLS nurses) – currently on a weekly basis.
  • Patient Safety: Ensure the design of the FLS is in compliance with current Osteoporosis Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines and current FLS science including Osteoporosis Canada’s Essential Elements of FLS.
  • Education: As needed, assist the FLS Clinical Nurse Educator in training new FLS nurses.  Assist with the provision of on-going clinical updates.  Review educational materials provided to NSH FLS patients.
  • Quality Improvement: Maintain currency of the NSH FLS Care Directive, FLS protocols and algorithms with the most up-to-date Osteoporosis Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines and FLS science with the NSH FLS Clinical Nurse Educator.  Provide oversight to the FLSs’ continuous quality improvement, including ensuring participation of all NSH FLSs in any Osteoporosis Canada national FLS audits.
  • Communications: Attend the regular NSH FLS Team meetings (typically once a week).  Where indicated, liaise with external stakeholders to explore solutions to improve osteoporosis care for fragility fracture patients.  Review all communications, including reports and presentations, targeted to stakeholders outside of the NSH FLS Team which provide details on the FLS model of care and/or NSH FLS performance data to ensure accuracy of the information. Where requested, represents the interests of the NSH FLS Team on external committees or meetings.

In keeping with the reporting relationship to the Senior Medical Director, Primary Health Care, the FLS Medical Director will:

  • Meet on a semi-annual basis with the Senior Medical Director, PHC to discuss the progress of the deliverables as outlined.
  • Provide quarterly progress reports.
  • Participate in portfolio and departmental activities as requested.

Qualifications

Eligibility:

MANDATORY:

  • License to practice medicine in Nova Scotia
  • Credentialed in Nova Scotia.
  • Willingness to learn FLS science and FLS continuous quality improvement processes.
  • Demonstrated relationship building abilities.

The following would be considered an asset:

  • Expertise in clinical osteoporosis management, including good knowledge of the October 2023 Osteoporosis Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines.  This role will be open to internists and family physicians.  For family physician candidates: willingness to acquire additional clinical osteoporosis knowledge and experience will be essential.
  • Knowledge of FLS science including Osteoporosis Canada’s Essential Elements of FLS and FLS KPIs.
  • Expertise in quality improvement methodologies; monitoring of quality and performance indicators as well as patient-reported outcome measures.
  • Demonstrated advanced communications skills/positive energetic public persona.
  • Excellent leadership, relationship building, organizational and decision skills in support of patient, family, and client centered services.

Additional Information

Time Requirements:
The time required for this position is approximately 4 hours per week.

Compensation:
Remuneration will be commensurate with experience.
