The Opportunity

The Sustainability Quality Improvement Consultant advances IWK Health’s environmental sustainability strategy by leading unit-specific and organization-wide sustainability and operational improvement initiatives that strengthen clinical quality, patient safety, environmental performance, and system efficiency.

Working collaboratively with clinical, administrative, and operational teams, the consultant applies evidence-based improvement methods and change-management approaches to embed sustainability into everyday care delivery. Through project leadership, education, and strategic advisory support, the role informs organizational decision-making and builds capacity for lasting improvement.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of sustainability-focused quality improvement (SusQI) projects that translate organizational priorities into measurable improvements for patients, families, and care teams.
  • Analyze clinical and operational workflows, identify waste and inefficiencies, and lead process redesign across programs and services to support safer, more sustainable, and efficient care.
  • Provide evidence-based guidance to integrate sustainability into policies, clinical pathways, procurement decisions, and operational practices.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to identify improvement opportunities, develop practical solutions, and address barriers to implementation.
  • Apply change-management strategies to build engagement, support the adoption of new practices, and sustain improvements over time.
  • Develop and deliver education, training, tools, and coaching that equip staff and physicians to identify and implement sustainability-focused improvements.
  • Lead data collection, analysis, and reporting to assess the environmental, operational, and clinical outcomes of improvement initiatives.
  • Translate complex information into clear recommendations, reports, and presentations that support evidence-informed decisions by project teams, leaders, and organizational committees.
  • Monitor project outcomes and use feedback to refine interventions, share successful practices, and strengthen a culture of continuous improvement and environmental responsibility.

Hours of Work

75 hours biweekly (37.5 hours weekly).

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the following fields of study: Health Service Administration, Health Information Management, Business, Industrial Engineering, or Environmental Studies
  • Master's degree preferred
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) preferred
  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) preferred
  • Change Management Practitioner certification preferred
  • Direct experience managing or coordinating environmental sustainability projects or initiatives preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Able to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team 
  • Critical thinking skills to develop innovative solutions to complex and unpredictable problems. 
  • Support evidence‑informed decision‑making
  • Ability to adapt information and messages to suit different audiences, contexts or situations
  • Competencies in other languages an asset.
