About the Opportunity
Under the direction of Management or designate the Senior Medical Laboratory Assistant (Senior MLA) performs various functions within the laboratory relating to the pre and post-analytical phases of testing. The Senior MLA is in a team lead role supporting the division/site with technical expertise, quality assurance, adherence to policy and practices and mentorship within the scope of employment of a Medical Laboratory Assistant. In collaboration with the Laboratory Supervisor or Technical Specialist , the Senior MLA may assist with the oversight and/or implementation of work processes, training and the redirection of resources to respond to fluctuations in operational workload. The Senior MLA must be able to work independently, use good judgment, apply sound troubleshooting skills and demonstrate excellent customer service. The Senior MLA must demonstrate a commitment to patient safety, quality improvement and sustainability while promoting a positive work environment. The Senior MLA works within a work team comprised predominantly of MLAs.
About You
We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
- Recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent (as determined by NSCMLT)
- Candidates must have successfully completed the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and have current registration with CSMLS
- Licensure with Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technology (NSCMLT)
- Three years Medical Laboratory Assistant experience required
- Experience with Laboratory Information System Cerner Millennium and other related computer skills.
- Demonstrates comprehension of Quality Management principles, applicable accreditation standards, regulations and bylaws
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills including conflict resolution and non violent crisis intervention skills
- High level of pre and post analytical skills
- Ability to act effectively as a preceptor including presenting education materials and assisting with training of staff and students.
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to write/revise Standard Operating Procedures
- May require Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certification
- May require Non violent crisis intervention (NVCI) training
- Demonstrates an aptitude for troubleshooting
- Demonstrates patient/client focus on customer service
- Demonstrates willingness to share knowledge and accept accountability for the responsibilities of the role
- Demonstrates a dedication to the Code of Conduct for Medical Laboratory Professionals
- Demonstrates an understanding of financial reporting by contributing to the investigation of budget variance, makes recommendations to support fiscal accountability (change in supply, realignment of schedule to reduce overtime).
- May require in depth knowledge of MIS standards, CLSI guidelines, SIMS and safety standards
- Access to reliable transportation as travel may be required
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
- Demonstrates an aptitude for troubleshooting

Compensation and Benefits
$25.63 - $29.86 Hourly
