About the Opportunity

Associate physicians are licensed physicians employed by NSH to provide primary clinical care within the Hospitalist Program as physician extenders. Associate physicians will assist in the provision of care under the authority of the Program Director and supervision of a Clinical Supervisor (staff physician with privileges within the department in which the AP will be practicing).

Participation in the on-call schedule is required and will be assigned by the Program Director, completed by the associate physician and supported by the Clinical Supervisor.

The basic requirements for a AP License with CPSNS are as follows:

  • be a graduate from a medical university or school that meets criteria approved by the Council of the College; meet the requirements as set-out in Section 49 of the Medical Practitioners Regulations;
  • have acquired 2 years of postgraduate training and 1 year of licensed practice experience OR 1 year of postgraduate training and 2 years of licensed practice experience;
  • be a Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) or hold an acceptable alternative to the LMCC
  • have recent practice experience and training (completed within the last 5 years);
  • medical liability protection 
  • meet the English Language Proficiency standards of the College;
  • hold a valid work permit, permanent resident status or Canadian citizenship; 

All potential candidates for associate physician positions must have their credentials assessed and approved by the Registration Department of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia prior to accepting job offers from Nova Scotia Health.
 

Specific Accountabilities

Under the supervision of an attending staff physician, the Associate physician will: 

•    Function as a member of the team at the level of a junior resident

•    Make regular rounds with the clinical supervisor

•    Liaise with nurses, attending staff, crisis workers and other members of the health care team in the development and management of the overall patient care plan

•    Manage the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, in consultation with the clinical supervisor and attending staff

•    Perform assessments and examinations within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence and privileges and according to established policies and protocols

•    Perform and document admission history, progress notes, discharge summaries, consultation notes, reports etc

•    Communicate with patients, families, referring and family physicians concerning patient management plans

•    Arrange consultation with other departments for care and investigation

•    Follow through on investigations and arrange follow-up and outpatient visits

•    Attend educational sessions and rounds as time permits as well as monthly departmental meetings

•    Participate in Continuing Professional Development of at least 50 hours per year

•    Participate in on-call responsibilities of the service

 

Existing gaps that this position will assist with include: 

•    Timely access to clinical care 

•    Span of control 

•    Ability to provide early disease detection/ prevention        

•    Extended hospital stays 

•    Delayed access to follow-up care

These responsibilities are meant to be indicative of the job responsibilities and duties and are not inclusive. Performance evaluations will be conducted bi-annually by the Program Director and shared with the Zone Medical Executive Director, Medical Affairs Leads and CPSNS.  
 

About You

•    Must have postgraduate training and independent practice in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine
•    Must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License to act as an Associate Physician, from the College of Physicians and Surgeon of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) (https://cpsns.ns.ca/resource/clinical-assistant-licence)
•    CMPA coverage required
•    Good command of written and spoken English
•    Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
•    Physical demand - Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
•    Mental and Visual demand – High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
•    Competencies in other languages an asset
•    Ability to hold a valid work permit, permanent resident status or Canadian citizenship a must

All associate physicians in the following clinical departments must pass the following certificate programs before the end of the probationary period: 

  • Adult Medicine - Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) 
  • Pediatric Medicine - Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) 
  • Neonatal Medicine - Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) 

Hours

  • x2 Permanent, full-time positions, 96 hrs bi-weekly

Compensation and Benefits

$51.66 - $65.81 Hourly
