About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director and Site Lead for Dartmouth General, in partnership with the Medical Site Lead, is responsible for operational planning, management and leadership of Dartmouth General Hospital to ensure care is integrated and reflects best practice evidence-based care. This includes ensuring the various services/programs at the site meet clinical, research and teaching mandates and comply with established standards and regulations. The Director has shared accountability for setting priorities and implementing strategies that support high quality, safe, cost effective, person centred care. This includes the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of services while supporting effective and efficient patient access and flow, maintaining efficient and effective resource utilization, patient/family satisfaction, and quality patient care that meets established standards and public expectations.

Working in a collaborative model with physician and zone operational leaders, this position enables and supports the ongoing and future delivery of fully integrated services at the site and across the zone. The Director of Dartmouth General works collaboratively with Senior Directors, Directors, Managers and the DGH Redevelopment Team to support and plan for expanded service delivery at this site. The Director ensures continuous improvement to advance a vision of academic excellence within the provision of care and is responsible for the development, maintenance and monitoring of quality management and safety programs, and compliance with relevant standards and accreditation requirements. The Director facilitates and champions a learning and research environment that aligns with the current and proposed future state of Nova Scotia Health. 

Specific Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Planning and Systems Design

  • Develop policies, procedures, and strategic plans aligned with Nova Scotia Health priorities.
  • Collaborate with leaders to allocate resources and implement service changes that enhance safety and sustainability.


Quality Service Delivery and System Performance

  • Foster a culture of safety and continuous improvement to enhance outcomes and satisfaction.
  • Lead quality management systems and ensure compliance with regulations and standards.


Visible Leadership, Partnership, and Relationships

  • Provide accessible leadership to build strong partnerships and a positive work environment.
  • Guide redevelopment projects while mitigating risks and maintaining effective communication with stakeholders.

System Transformation and Engagement

  • Build networks and partnerships to support person-centered care and community involvement.
  • Promote research, innovation, and emergency preparedness aligned with organizational goals.


Financial Stewardship and Accountability

  • Manage budgets, monitor expenditures, and recommend actions to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Collaborate to address access and flow challenges across programs and services and resource utilization to improve patient flow.


Talent Management and Employee Engagement

  • Promote a respectful, collaborative workplace that fosters professional development and continuous learning.
  • Provide tools, resources, and mentorship to support leadership capacity and employee performance.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Master’s Degree in a health related discipline, health administration, business administration or related subject. Equivalent experience and/or alternative education may be considered
  • 7-10 years of relevant senior leadership experience with progressive accountabilities for financial, strategic and people management to deliver high quality services within a tertiary, quaternary and academic health centre
  • Eligible for registration with relevant health or professional discipline/college or association
  • Experience working in acute clinical services and the health system
  • Certified Health Executive designation
  • Strategic Health Leadership and Safety Certification an asset
  • Excellent leadership, relationship building, organizational and decision skills in support of patient, family and client centred services
  • Expert knowledge to critically analyze evidence-based practices to inform strategy development and organizational planning
  • Demonstrated skill in strategic planning and systems thinking
  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships and partnerships with stakeholders
  • Expertise in financial planning
  • Understands the principles of project management and demonstrated ability to create and lead complex work teams
  • Expertise in quality improvement methodologies; monitor quality and performance indicators
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills that are responsive to audience needs
  • Demonstrated advanced communications skills/positive energetic public persona
  • Demonstrated cultural competence
  • Exceptional collaboration, negotiation, conflict resolution, and persuasion skills are essential for engaging and aligning internal and external stakeholders

Compensation and Benefits

$61.9197 - $77.3998 hourly ($120,743 - $150,929 annually)
