About the Opportunity
Psychologists work individually and on teams to provide psychological assessment, diagnosis and treatment intervention to individuals, families and groups. They provide consultations to hospital staff. Psychologists engage in research and program evaluation. Psychologists develop and evaluate new assessment, treatment programs and services to better meet patient needs. Psychologists teach and supervise psychology trainees and other health profession learners. Psychologists utilizes discipline specific skills, knowledge, related clinical experiences and abilities to provide psychological assessments, care planning, direct clinical interventions (individual and group) and consultation to staff on complex cases and psychological issues across all areas. Although most psychologists engage in all of these activities, they differ in the proportion of time allocated to each. The broad percentage ranges below reflect this variability. Mental Health Psychologists work with patients with primarily mental health problems.
About You
We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
- PhD in Psychology from an educational institution acceptable to the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology
- Registered or eligible to register with the appropriate regulatory body within the Province of Nova Scotia (acceptable if can be registered as Candidate Register initially, if a recent graduate of a training program); a Candidate Register status for a doctoral psychologist typically lasts for one year and involves monthly supervision and culminates in written and oral exams to allow transition to fully independent/unsupervised practice.
- Advanced training and experience in child and adolescent mental health
- Advanced Knowledge of the DSM and ability to use to assess and diagnose childhood mental health disorders (ADHD, anxiety, depression, behavior disorder, neurodevelopmental disorders) concurrent disorders and the ability to identify and refer on more severe disorders (e.g. psychosis, bipolar)
- Diagnostic training and experience, completing mental health assessments and implementing evidence-based treatment plans for children and adolescents
- Experience completing psychoeducational and other psychological assessments
- Demonstrated leadership skills in working collaboratively and cooperatively as part of a multi-disciplinary team within a flexible work schedule and environment
- Demonstrated expertise to practice behavior management, cognitive behavior therapy, group therapy for children and adolescents, and brief therapy models
- Exemplary ability to coordinate the development of effective linkages with other agencies such as, justice, education, social service and community agencies as needed
- Demonstrated experience in crisis and suicide risk assessment and intervention
- Demonstrated leadership skills in working collaboratively and cooperatively as part of a multi-disciplinary team within a flexible work schedule and environment
- Demonstrated experience in crisis and suicide risk assessment and intervention
- The ability to work with a high degree of autonomy in a manner consistent with the policies and standards of Mental Health Services and NSH
- Group facilitation is required
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Compensation and Benefits
$52.99- $66.23 Hourly
