The Opportunity
Under the supervision of the Manager, Plant Maintenance & Operations, the Carpenter maintains, alters and installs new and existing walls, doors, and ceilings. This position also builds and repairs cabinetry and millwork using hand and power tools. The Carpenter's duties include, but are not limited to:
- Performs preventative maintenance duties as required to walls, ceilings, t-bar, doors, hardware, windows, and frames.
Measures, cuts, shapes, assembles and joins materials made of wood, wood substitutes, lightweight steel, and other materials. - Builds cabinetry.
- Repairs existing walls and ceilings and builds new walls.
- Assists in minor construction and renovation projects by building new walls and ceilings.
- Prepares layouts in conformance to buildings codes using measuring tools.
- Fits and installs trim items such as doors, stairs, moulding, and hardware.
- Replaces window glass and frames.
- Repairs, alters, and removes shelving units.
- Reads and interprets drawings, sketches, blueprints, and specifications.
- Completes reports to create maintenance records.
- Operates, uses, and maintains tools and equipment safely, economically, and in accordance with trade practices.
- Participates in training and orientation of new staff and others as required.
- Large portion of position will be coordinating new construction projects, demolition & construction within IWK Health.
Hours of Work
Monday to Friday, 8:00 am-4:00 pm
Your Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
- Certified Journeyperson Carpenter as issued by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour or equivalent required.
- Two (2) years’ of related experience required.
- Knowledge of the current edition of National Building Code.
- Ability to work both in a team and independently.
- Ability to react effectively to emergencies or other changes in work environment that require immediate re-prioritizing of tasks.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches, blueprints, and specifications.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety procedures and policies.
- Ability to recognize and appropriately react to potential dangers.
- Ability to follow instructions and work processes.
- Competencies in other languages an asset.
