About the Opportunity
Associate Physicians are licensed physicians employed by Nova Scotia Health to provide medical care under the supervision of a fully licensed physician. This position is assigned to the Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery. Participation in the call schedule is required. Associate Physicians report directly to the Cardiac Surgery Clinical Assistant Program Director or his or her designate and indirectly to the Central Zone Executive Medical Director through the Director of Medical Affairs, NSHA.
Clinical Responsibilities
Under the supervision of an attending member of the Division of Cardiac Surgery:
- Functions as a member of the team on the Cardiac Surgery Service. Makes regular rounds with supervising staff and fellow residents on the wards and in the CVICU.
- Assists at surgical procedures, may perform appropriate portions of the procedure within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence, under direct attending supervision.
- Works with attending staff, nurses, and Residents, and other members of the health care team in the development of the overall patient care program.
- Communicates with patients, families, referring, and family physicians concerning patient management plans.
- Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, death certificates, etc.
- Manages the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, in consultation with attending staff.
- Performs procedures within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence including: the insertion of peripheral intravenous lines, initiation of intravenous medication, taking blood samples for diagnostic purposes or arterial blood gases, insertion of Foley catheters, insertion and removal of intra-aortic balloon pumps, insertion of central lines, arterial lines, insertion and removal of chest tubes, intubation and management of ventilation, adjustment of inotropes and vasopressors. In all of the above the Clinical Assistant will not proceed until full training and competence has been established with sign off by the Program Director or his/her designate.
- Arranges consultations with other departments for care and investigation.
- Follows through on investigations and arranges follow-up outpatient visits.
- Is recertified for procedures within the scope of his/her demonstrated competencies.
- Attends educational sessions and rounds as time permits. Interacts with and orientates clinical clerks and PGY1’s, new to the Cardiac Surgery Service.
- Participates in on-call responsibilities of the service including consultations.

- Must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (Clinical Assistant Licence - Registration Policies College of Physicians & Surgeons of Nova Scotia (cpsns.ns.ca))
- Must have obtained (in writing) Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline. Please upload this with your application
- CMPA coverage required
- ACLS certification required
- Good command of written and spoken English
- Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
- Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship and postgraduate training and experience in Neurosurgery are consider assets
- Physical demand - Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
- Mental and Visual demand – High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
- Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred

Compensation and Incentives
$51.67 – 65.80 hourly
